So, it’s 2020 and you’re looking for a way of getting into marketing, I get it. Digital marketing is a really exciting field to be in, since it offers many career options, allows you to be creative, and of course pays well. However, in order to succeed, you have to take your time to upskill yourself in the most crucial fields.
Below you can find 8 things that I have done to increase my chances of getting hired in marketing. As a recent graduate, I highly recommend you following my footsteps and diving deeper into the world of marketing.
1. Understand The Job
Digital Marketing consists of many branches, such as Social Media, Paid Media, E-mail marketing just to name a few. Most of those require a different variety of skills. Before you even start learning and applying for jobs, you have to do your research.
You can start with:
- Finding out more about all of the different fields of marketing.
- Understanding the difference between most popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc.
Have a look at different job boards and analyse requirements and the skills that are crucial to your chosen field. This will allow you to learn only the crucial parts of the equation.
2. Develop Crucial Skills
In order to be considered for a job, you have to show that you’ve got the appropriate skills, right? Marketers currently use a wide variety of software and technologies that are crucial in their operations.
Some of those include:
- Adobe Suite
- HTML and CSS
Then again, what you are aiming for is creating a little mix of soft and hard skills. Don’t forget about focusing as well on skills such as public speaking, communication and analytical thinking.
Once you understand what skills you have to develop in order to progress, you’ll find it easy to learn with many online courses available.
3. Online Courses
Learning in 2020 could not be any easier. Once you have identified the key areas, it’s time to get to work! Spending an hour or two a day upskilling with one of the online courses will boost your career significantly! There is a lot of both free and paid courses that offer you certificates which will prove that you’re the right candidate.
My favourite platforms here are:
- Google Digital Garage
- Lynda provided by LinkedIn
I recommend you also check out content created by Gary Vaynerchuk, who has a tonne of content available on YouTube for free.
4. Get Your Hands Dirty
Knowing the theory is totally different than executing it. Starting your own social media profile related to your interests will give you an insight into the industry. It will also allow you to learn the practical side of managing social media channels, which is a valued skill by many companies.
If you’re at the university, joining a society and managing their social media is the perfect way to get some valuable experience. Asking your current employer, whether they need some help managing their Facebook or Instagram is also a great idea. Just get your hands dirty!
5. Work Experience
One of the easiest ways to be acknowledged is to gain practical work experience. This shows potential employers that you’re ready to start working, have the necessary knowledge, skills and of course a portfolio to show off.
It allows you to put the theory into practice and work with real-life cases. You will also understand the standards of the industry and see whether you enjoy it as well. The amount of networking that you will do while gaining working experience can also give you a lot of new opportunities.
There is a saying that “Your network is your net worth”. Being surrounded by like-minded people can open you the doors to many new opportunities. Networking can boost your confidence and can allow you to find lifelong relationships. And this is a good way to introduce yourself to the marketing world. You’ll gain information from first-hand about trends, open vacancies and much more.
My favourite ways of networking are attending local events and connecting with people on LinkedIn.
7. Start writing!
Strong copywriting is the key to successful marketing. 8 out of 10 people only read headlines (Copyblogger). You need to be able to create engaging copy that will resonate with the target audience. You have to learn how to create an exciting and unusual copy since it is a very valued skill on the market and can hugely improve your chances of landing the right job.
Fortunately, this is really easy to start! Just pick a topic that you are passionate about and START WRITING. Starting a blog here about your passions is a really great idea here!
8. Think Critically & Analyse
It’s super important for you to understand how marketing works. A really good way to do it is to start analysing the content that surrounds you.
Have a look at your Instagram feed, TV, and YouTube commercials and ask yourself the following questions:
- What message are they trying to tell you?
- What caught your attention?
- Why do you like certain posts/ads more than others?
- Is it because of the great aesthetics or great written copy?
Getting perspective on how successful marketing works and how content gets viral is a very valuable skill.
