Are you suited for a career in digital marketing? The truth is, anyone can become a marketer. Marketing is comprised of people with all kinds of backgrounds — journalism, law, logistics, and more.
Working in marketing can offer a variety of employment opportunities, including working in-house for a company, freelancing, or for an agency, even starting up your own firm (one day!) that could be you.
But to be a great marketer you need to practice, develop, and evolve. Looking at great marketers (Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk) over the years, there are certain qualities that they have developed that have helped them rise to great heights.
We can look at these qualities and can we use them to help you become more suited to life as a digital marketer.
All of these qualities can be learned and developed. Let’s take a look at 7 qualities that will help you become well suited to digital marketing.
Being creative is all about using your imagination to create something original.
Coming up with original ideas is hard, but original ideas help solve problems and to you, problems are interesting opportunities, you aim to challenge assumptions, you are open-minded to new ideas and rejection and you don’t give up easily.
However, as a marketer, we advise that you work hard but also play hard, playing, and being creative is where originality sprouts.
You may have heard the term ‘thinking outside the box’ well that’s basically another way of saying ‘innovative’ and being innovative is all about introducing new ideas; original and creative thinking is something that can be learned and helps with devising new ways to carry out tasks, solve problems, and meet new challenges, something which digital marketers face every day.
Businesses look for people that can solve work-related issues or customer problems it adds to their bottom line.
By being creative, you also develop new ways of thinking or new ways of approaching a problem. Marketers can develop this quality over time helping customers rethink the way they view a product or the world.
Pay attention. Attention is everything. It’s what you strive to grab off customers and it is what you need more than anything from them. However, in order to get attention, you need to listen to them, understand the problems they have.
The same goes for clients, being able to Listen to brief requirements, listening to client requests. Listening is also about being able to understand, to understand a situation fully before thinking creatively about it, and acting on it.
As a marketer, listening is arguably more powerful than speaking.
As a marketer being able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious is what marketers have to do, every single day.
Ironically, this in itself takes patience and a lot of work, it can take years to work on, but being able to tolerate hurdles and unexpected problems will only make you better at adapting and problem-solving, see problems as opportunities.
Also, from a personal point of view, being patient about our own progress, goals, and dreams is important – these all take time, and rushing to get there will only result in disappointment, you need to earn your battle stripes, and you will.
Marketers are motivated by many different factors (money, titles, adoration, world dominance) there are too many to list here.
Being motivated helps you keep your eye on the prize, motivation helps you push forward towards reaching that marketing goal, that milestone you have set yourself.
Being driven also focuses the mind on exploring new innovative solutions and ideas to deliver your client’s brief or exceed your customer’s expectations.
As a marketer, you must have a motivation, a target to aim at. Find yours!
Motivation. This is very similar to the quality of being driven. Being motivated feeds success based on what one feels to be true even without conscious reasoning – you might have these feelings a lot and as a marketer, we need to get these to work for us and most importantly, your customers!
Motivating your customer is a quality that you learn. Marketing focuses heavily on persuasion: it’s all about grabbing people’s attention, getting them to change their minds, and convince them to do something that they didn’t want to do. – motivating them into taking an action – Marketers like you and I compete every day to develop messages that will be noticed and spark motivation.
The human touch. Personalisation, adaptability, and flexibility, you are marketing to real people and your content must reflect that. Like most of the listed qualities, this could have its own podcast.
Being social is an important quality to have as a marketer and even if it’s not your strongest quality it is something that can work on and developed. People are customers, and if you are comfortable talking and conversing with people you’re half-way there.
This quality can help you enjoy networking, attending trade events, and workshops, it helps you get a better understanding of the people you want to talk to.
